“If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace.”
― John Lennon

Doubletap Audio was a company I would see here and there on the internet. I liked them because they were creating something different and unique.

Although being from a relative gunless country and i have not much experience in such matters - i do enjoy seeing people repurpose and recycle various goods for another purpose. Its too easy to throw things away in the bin after they have served their intended purpose (in this case shells from a shooting range i presume).

I am all for the curious, the excellent and the smaller businesses.

*The stats for each earphone listed are fairly similar with a couple of minor differences. I chose to list them in their entirety.

Cool clean lines, unique stylings and a detachable cable add to the appeal.

Nice, small, no waste packaging in an age of over bloated eye candy packaging

Specifications in brief:

A hard case and lots of tip selection is a plus. (See the earlier photo for the array of tips).

Sound

The audio world has been saturated in budget, affordable and good looking earphones in the past two years or so, most in an in ear monitor (IEM) type enclosure with a variety of drivers.

I have not tried a lot of them although many online shops have contacted me and offered most of them for review, many of them splashed across Facebook and some have been featured on Head pie via its contributors. I myself do not have enough time being a father of two and having a job etc  to cover everything in the audio world, nor do i wish to.

Audio is obviously a business for companies, and for shops and dealers - everyone has rent to pay, mouths to feed, maybe kids and a mortgage to look after. Reviewers for good or bad are playing a middle role, an interface offering a private opinion to and for the general public. The main majority of reviewers i have talked with in person or online are generally good people of various ages with good ethics and strong morals and do the best that they can with what time they have left over from family, work, study, free time etc.

Probably less than 3% of reviewers get any monetary incentive/return through sponsored adverts or clickable adverts - but they are the deserving ones who have gathered enough of a following (and web traffic) through their hard work and years of efforts. Reviewers of books, for movies, cars, phones, restaurants, shows, music etc  and many other product reviewers or promoters have made legitimate and acceptable careers from it, but for audio (especially portable) its still a taboo. Even in this age of the influencer, sponsors, in$tagrammers, youtubers & stars, video game streamers, google adsense and patreon etc.

We are still living in the stacked rigs and made in garages amps year of 2007 whilst the portable audio world has moved on to become an immense economic monster of its own in the present.

The reviewer communities established unwritten rules and guidelines are slowly morphing with flipping/reselling, direct payments and all sorts of new norms recently appearing beyond the outdated archaic  semi- bartering system of `heres our gear, please review it and you can hold onto it`.

I am curious as to what the future holds.

As for now, Head pie still sucks and makes zero dollars. Its a forced hobby at times. But one i still enjoy - even though the landscape is changing and will continue to change.

but once again i ramble and digress...

...i guess thats what most of you that still stick around Head pie are looking for, that and hidden codes in the odd review and memes on Head pie instagram and the HP Facebook group.

For the rest:

Sound, sound, sound. Just tell us about the sound.

Most reading reviews just skip to the sound section, because thats whats it all about really with earphones. Is the sound decent enough, does the sonic signature match my tastes? Is the cable good quality and durable enough? Are they a good fit? Built well?

Many of these can be plainly seen in the photos which is why i always provide plenty with minimal commentary, i trust in the intelligence of my readers. Of course many consumers just want to be enabled and told what to buy.

Double Tap Audio has designed a unique offering one that sets them above and beyond many other offerings. Something different in a sea of similar shells and near identical innards is refreshing.

Sure Double Tap Audio goes for the good old tried and proven 10mm Dynamic Driver, and why not? IEMs are so variable in quality, especially with decent music files on an excellent dap.

So the Double Tap Audio quirky designed earphones, fad or fact?, good or mere ear jewelry?
As already noted its hard to fail with a decent 10mm driver, but many have down so due to a poor choice of shell, cable and tip combination.

The Double Tap Audio R2 is a well rounded earphone overall.
It has a non dominating V shape to its sound, with enough rich mids to enhance both male and female vocals.
The treble and bass do not reach as far as some other earphones, but enough to satisfy. Bass hits hard, (could be tighter at times) when needed and is generally fast and the treble is clear and precise.
The sound stage is medium, and with a healthy separation and instrument placing.

Bear in mind that it is an under US$100 earphone and as such as in most things in life you do get what you pay for. Daps do not sound the same once you volume match them with a SPL meter, connect them to a headphone switcher box and do differ in general in music reproduction quality and resolution as one goes up the chain, and also each has its own sonic flavor usually these days more due to the amps than the dac, though not always the case.

I had good results with tip rolling such as Symbio W Peel, Acoustune 07(my fave pairing) & 08 and JVC Spiral Tips. I did also have great results pairing it with the ALO Audio standard Litz cable.
The supplied narrow bore tips and stock cable can make the bass a bit loose and woolly at times (dont expect a CA Vega with DX220 type experience).
if one has a healthy supply of tips and cables then you may want to select the earphones only.

When paired with a smartphone or lower end dap etc the experience is well matched. With a bit of tip and cable rolling one would be able to pair them with a mid tier dap.

The Double tap Audio R2 is a great little earphone with an array of buying options (I would like to see their Auxiliary Cables as MMCX earphone cables), the sound is more than acceptable within the price range yet is one of so many within the sub US$100 range and a honest self run small company.

So if your looking for something with a fun look and sound, casual warmth, medium sound stage and a generally decent amount of imaging, timbre and dynamics then the R2 might be for you.

Price

From US$34.99 for just the earbuds (no cable).

And US$59.99 for the basic set.

“If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it. Peace, Montag. Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of 'facts' they feel stuffed, but absolutely 'brilliant' with information. Then they'll feel they're thinking, they'll get a sense of motion without moving. And they'll be happy, because facts of that sort don't change.”
